Representing Asylum Seekers in Removal Proceedings
This interactive workshop will help prepare legal representatives to successfully represent a client in an asylum case in immigration court. This workshop is intended for fully accredited representatives and attorneys. We will discuss trial skills in immigration court proceedings, including conducting a successful direct examination, preparing a client for cross examination, and utilizing redirect examination as a tool. We will also troubleshoot common issues that can occur in immigration court and brainstorm how to effectively deal with them. Participants will work in small groups throughout the day to refine their skills. Participants will be provided with a case file and required reading on asylum law two weeks prior to the training. They should come to the training familiar with the case file and the reading. Limited to 50 participants, separate registration fee of $100.
