"Objection!" How to Object Effectively in Immigration Court
While practitioners have many options for protecting witnesses and preserving the record for appeal, knowing how to object effectively is perhaps the most important tool. In this training, Assistant U.S. Attorney Veronica J. Finkelstein will offer a dynamic discussion on objection techniques and demonstrate how to object effectively to common pitfalls in immigration court. To get the most from this training, participants should be familiar with the evidentiary framework in immigration court proceedings and, to this end, we encourage participants to review CLINIC’s Practice Advisory: Rules of Evidence in Immigration Court Proceedings before this training.
At the Department of Justice, Veronica J. Finkelstein serves as primary litigation counsel for the United States. She has tried numerous cases to defense verdicts, including in tort, employment law, and medical malpractice cases. She also handles immigration cases pending in district and circuit courts. In addition to this defensive work, Finkelstein investigates and prosecutes affirmative fraud claims and handles criminal child exploitation cases. In 2014, she was awarded the Executive Office of United States Attorneys Director’s Award for Superior Performance as a Civil Assistant United States Attorney. In addition to serving as an AUSA, Ms. Finkelstein teaches for National Advocacy Center, a nationwide training center operated by the United States Department of Justice, or DOJ, through its Office of Legal Education, or OLE, and the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Finkelstein also serves as adjunct faculty of law at Drexel Law, Emory Law and Rutgers Law. She teaches a variety of classes including Professional Responsibility, Pretrial Advocacy, Trial Advocacy, Appellate Advocacy, Evidence, Litigation Practice Skills, Sales Law, Criminal Law, and Corrections Law.
