Join us for a two-part introduction to asylum law and procedure. We will present an overview of asylum law, including withholding of removal, Convention Against Torture protection and bars to such relief. We will also discuss hot topics, recent procedural hurdles, and provide an update on the administration’s continued assault on asylum seekers, including the latest attempt to gut the asylum system through the recent Interim Final Rule released on June 15, 2020.

Webinar 1: Introduction to Asylum Law

In this webinar, we will focus on the basics of asylum law. We will take you through concepts of past persecution and well-founded fear, the five protected grounds, establishing a nexus to these grounds, as well as humanitarian asylum, withholding of removal and protection under the Convention Against Torture. We will also discuss bars to asylum and other related relief.

 


Webinar 2: Asylum Procedures and Representing Clients at the Border

Sept. 17 | CA MCLE: 1.5

In this webinar, we will discuss affirmative and defensive asylum procedures, including special procedures for unaccompanied minors and detained clients. We will discuss recent changes to asylum law and procedure, including the proposed asylum regulations, the Remain in Mexico policy, the “asylum bans” and an overview of the protection screening process (credible fear and reasonable fear) for those subject to expedited removal and reinstatement and/or administrative removal.
