CLINIC is among the more than 210,000 organizations and individuals that submitted comments in response to the Department of Homeland Security’s Notice of Public Rule Making (NPRM) entitled “Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds.” CLINIC opposes the NPRM, which would drastically change the definition and scope of the public charge ground of inadmissibility. In summary, CLINIC opposes DHS’ proposal because it: lacks justification and is not supported by evidence; is contrary to legislative intent and case law; would unnecessarily jeopardize public health, safety, and family stability; and would create new inefficiencies and burdens on immigrants, legal representatives, and government agencies. The proposal is contrary to our Catholic values and faith teachings, as it would negatively affect family unity, stability, and threaten public health. Therefore, CLINIC has requested DHS withdraw this NPRM.
