“We Cannot Look Away:” CLINIC Responds to Allegations of Migrant Abuse at Texas Border
SILVER SPRING, Maryland — The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), is horrified by a news report released this week outlining the inhumane treatment of migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border. The report shares accounts of Texas troopers instructed to push children into the Rio Grande River and to deny water to migrants during a deadly heat wave.
“These reports represent the very worst of the U.S. immigration system, which dehumanizes the vulnerable and desperate people caught within it, who seek safety within our borders,” said Anna Gallagher, CLINIC executive director. “People of faith and conscience cannot look away from the fact that these actions are done by government employees in our name. Either we believe that all people bear untouchable dignity, or we don’t. Permitting this despicable behavior denies that truth and rejects the deepest principles of our Catholic faith and our nation’s values.”
