Webinar 1: Intro to Asylum Law

During this first webinar, we will focus on the basics of asylum. We will take you through concepts of past persecution and well-founded fear, the five protected grounds, and establishing a nexus to these grounds. We will discuss humanitarian asylum, as well as withholding of removal and relief under the Convention Against Torture. This webinar will also further explain recent scheduling changes for affirmative asylum cases and strategies to address these changes.
Webinar 2: Bars to Asylum: The Asylum One-Year Filing Deadline and Other Mandatory Bars

What happens if your client missed the deadline to file for asylum? In this webinar, we will delve into the one-year filing deadline and its exceptions, including ways to formulate arguments for those exceptions. We will address recent litigation and how it may create new opportunities for asylum applicants to meet the filing deadline. We will also discuss some important mandatory bars to asylum.

Central Americans, including unaccompanied minors, continue to flee persecution and come to the United States to seek protection. These asylum cases present specific challenges, such as formulating a viable particular social group or establishing a political opinion in gang-related claims. This webinar will discuss tips in representing Central American asylum seekers, as well as recent legal and policy developments that could impact their cases.
Webinar 4: Nuts and Bolts of Asylum Filings

One of the keys to successfully assisting asylum seekers is laying a great foundation for your case. This webinar will discuss how to interview your client, gather evidence, prepare the asylum application (Form I-589) and declaration, as well as prepare a well-argued brief. We will take you through the nuts and bolts of presenting your asylum case before the asylum office and/or the immigration court. Finally, we will talk about tips for preparing the record for appeal before the Board of Immigration Appeals and circuit courts.
