Training and Technical Assistance Intern

USCIS Office of Administrative Appeals (AAO) has a database of non-precedent cases, and CLINIC has created a catalog of AAO decisions relating to U nonimmigrant status for victims of crime. The intern would work to update this catalog of U status AAO decisions. The intern may also be asked to conduct research to assist with CLINIC newsletter articles, trainings and manuals as needed. Assist with preparing cases for pro bono direct representation as needed.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Research USCIS U status decisions in the AAO database and update the existing catalog accordingly.
  • Conduct other research as needed by the Training and Technical Assistance team for newsletter articles, trainings, manuals and other publications.
  • Assist with pro bono direct representation cases by conducting legal screenings to determine eligibility for immigration benefits, research legal issues and country conditions, gather documentation and assist with case preparation. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Pursuing a J.D. degree.
  • Experience working with immigrants, marginalized communities or communities of color.
  • Work experience or law school course in immigration law or immigration law experience is helpful, but not required;
  • Experience in a nonprofit or law firm practicing public interest, litigation, immigration, criminal, or child custody law is helpful, but not required;
  • Strong legal research, and legal writing skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently;
  • Have proven organizational skills and a strong attention to detail.

Summary

The Senior Attorney has responsibility for providing accurate and comprehensive legal advice to CLINIC’s network of charitable immigration legal services organizations (“CLINIC affiliates”) through the Ask the Experts portal, conducting trainings (both in-person and virtually), and authoring articles and other legal resource materials. The attorney must analyze and apply immigration law principles to complex questions and fact scenarios. The attorney also oversees the remaining cases of CLINIC’s BIA Pro Bono Project as the project winds down.

Primary Responsibilities

BIA Pro Bono Project Management

  • Manage the wind-down of the BIA Pro Bono Project, maintain relationships with stakeholders, and oversee remaining project cases pending before the Board of Immigration Appeals.
  • Provide technical assistance and mentorship to pro bono attorneys handling remaining project cases on procedure and substantive immigration law matters including appeals, removal defense, asylum, and immigration consequences of criminal convictions.
  • Oversee administrative aspects of the project such as maintaining case files in CLINIC’s case management system and ensuring that each has the requisite documents.
  • Share descriptions of cases for representation within the project’s pro bono network when cases are remanded to immigration court or for appeal to a U.S. circuit court of appeals.
  • Maintain current statistics and data on the project and provide the Director of Training and Technical Assistance (TTA) with information needed for reporting purposes.

Technical Assistance and Training

  • Maintain a broad knowledge and understanding of U.S. immigration law and be informed about changes in immigration regulations and policies.

Bilingual Spanish Immigration Attorney - HANA Center

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic change. HANA Center has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.

HANA’s Immigration & Legal Services support 5,000 community members each year to access critical protections and build their legal capacity through completion of citizenship and DACA applications, participation in civic classes, pro bono legal consultation, Know Your Rights training, and legal representation for Adjustment of Status, VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa, TPS, FOIA, consular processing, asylum, bond hearing, and removal defense cases.

The Immigration Attorney is responsible for providing high quality immigration legal services for low-income, multiethnic immigrants in Chicago and the northwest suburbs. The Immigration Attorney works closely with HANA’s fully accredited DOJ representative to provide direct legal services to eligible community members, supervise legal support staff, and conduct program outreach. Common cases handled by the attorney include Adjustment of Status, VAWA, U-Visa, T-Visa, TPS, FOIA, and asylum.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct representation for community members seeking various forms of immigration relief
  • Supervise case management including but not limited to maintaining and reviewing client files, drafting cover letters, training staff on completing applications, and preparing and reviewing application packets
  • Advocate for community members before USCIS, ICE, CBP, NVC, EOIR, and other government agencies
  • Make appropriate referrals for immigration legal services beyond the scope of the program
  • Support monthly Legal Clinic, including developing and coordinating pro-bono attorneys
  • Coordinate with Community Navigators to provide legal oversight at Know Your Rights workshops
  • Perform factual and legal research and continually monitor changes in immigration law, regulations, and policy
  • Conduct strategic outreach to promote awareness about HANA’s programs and foster collaborative opportunities with other HANA programs and external partners
  • Prepare clear and concise reports for grant proposals and reports, including maintaining accurate, timely, and thorough client records in database

Qualifications

  • Commitment to immigrant rights and social, economic, and racial justice
  • A belief in communities’ ability to support each other, organize, and achieve desired goals together
  • Experience working on Korean American, Asian American, immigrant community issues, and/or social, economic, and racial justice issues preferred
  • Juris Doctorate (JD) degree required; individuals who will be sitting for an upcoming Bar Exam are also eligible to apply

Compensation
