Immigration Specialist

Catholic Charities has an opening for the position of Immigration Specialist in the Refugee & Immigration Services Department. This position is full-time based in Nashville and located at the Catholic Pastoral Center at 2806 McGavock Pike, Nashville, TN 37211. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary function of this position is to provide immigration counseling; immigration screening; document preparation, filing and follow-up; and document translation services for individuals in need of various immigration assistance. This work involves verifying eligibility documents, data entry, accurate and timely completion of forms and reports, communication of rights and responsibilities with clients, electronic submissions, and documentations of services.

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent, bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Prior experience working in the field of immigration, 2+ years preferred.
  • Prior Training in immigration document preparation and filing.

COther Skills or Requirements:

  • Bilingual proficiency. Must be able to read, speak both English and Spanish.

Summary

This representative of La Posada, an Anabaptist faith-based Immigrant Aid organization, will be convinced that God’s love embraces all peoples and cultures, is committed to working for peace and justice, and has a passion for the rights of people who need to navigate the legal system to make their home in the U.S.

La Posada, a nonprofit organization based in Elkhart Indiana focusing on acquiring immigration documentation required to have legal status, is looking for a Full-time Immigration Attorney. One year of minimum immigration experience. Current valid license in any US state, Indiana preferred. Spanish and English fluency required. Must be licensed in any jurisdiction in the United States.

Responsibilities

  1. Represent clients in removal proceedings in Immigration Courts, including in asylum cases (if, sufficiently experienced).
  2. Represent clients in other immigration matters such as adjustment of status and naturalization interviews before USCIS.
  3. Create and prepare immigrant and non-immigrant visas.
  4. Review and proofread complex evidence and case documents.
  5. Track, monitor, and log all evidence and documents for client cases.
  6. Create, compile, and prepare all documentation for filing.
  7. Proactively research new legislation and legal changes in immigration law.
  8. Prioritize multiple responsibilities and manage case deadlines for multiple clients.
  9. Assist with additional administrative and clerical duties as necessary.
  10. Participate in La Posada team planning and reporting.
  11. Meet with the Executive Director on a regular basis.
  12. Maintain a current knowledge of legal trends and changes.
  13. Nurture professional, personal and spiritual development and demonstrate Christian commitment and the spirit of La Posada to coworkers and clients.
  14. Demonstrate commitment to La Posada’s goals of anti-racist action.

Qualifications

  1. JD and current valid license in any US state, Indiana preferred.
  2. Ability to speak and write in Spanish is required.
  3. Strong advocacy, research, and writing skills; high-level attention to detail; and strong academic credentials.
  4. A minimum of one year experience in immigration law; passion for the rights of people who need help to navigate the legal system. Desire to work with underserved communities.
  5. Ability to work on daily tasks independently, proactively, and with minimal supervision.
  6. Sensitive, compassionate and positive; ability to relate well to people and listen perceptively.
  7. Some travel may be required.
  8. Computer skills – proficiency with word processing.
  9. Willingness to be flexible in work schedule, giving extra time when needed.

Summary

NewBridges is seeking a bilingual staff immigration attorney to lead the Immigration Legal Program. As the staff attorney, you will provide direct service to clients with a variety of immigration needs, such as: VAWA for survivors of domestic violence, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), U and T visas, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), permanent residence, and/or naturalization. The staff attorney will also provide supervision to accredited representatives/paralegals who will support case work.

Since 2000, NewBridges has been a vital resource in the Shenandoah Valley, providing direct services and connections to resources. NewBridges represents approximately 200 immigration cases per year in order to provide reliable, low-cost support to immigrants from all over the world. The organization is currently in the midst of a growth process as we look to expand our representation through a staff attorney.

Responsibilities

Direct Representation (60%)

  • The successful candidate will provide representation to immigrants, refugees, and asylees
  • Responsibilities will include preparing and submitting immigration applications to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
  • Responding to requests for evidence; keeping clients informed about their case status
  • Ensuring that clients receive and understand communications from USCIS regarding their pending applications
  • Preparing clients for interviews with USCIS
  • Representing clients before the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR)
  • Educating clients about their rights and obligations under immigration law

Management, Supervision and Training (40%)

  • Oversee the NewBridges Immigration Law Program, providing direction and guidance on overall strategy and practice within the organization
  • Supervise accredited representatives on staff and ensure case work is completed in a timely and accurate manner
  • Identify and contribute to grant funding opportunities
  • Facilitate additional learning opportunities for accredited representatives and paralegals
  • Work with volunteers and interns to ensure records are well maintained
  • Provide reports to the Executive Director on cases and outcomes

Essential Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor and active bar license
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking in English and Spanish
  • 1-2 Years of Immigration Law Experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and cross-cultural communication skills are required
  • Public interest, specifically community-based, nonprofit legal experience and/or demonstrated commitment to the public interest required
  • Excellent computer skills and office administration skills including Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and Excel
  • Prior supervisory experience, preferably in a legal setting
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical, legal research, and writing skills
  • Previous experience working with immigrant communities (including lived experience)
  • Desire and ability to work independently, but also able to perform in a team environment 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow rules of ethical practice
  • Ability to stay organized, manage a high volume workload, and work under strict deadlines
  • Sensitivity to the needs and legal issues affecting people of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and sensitivity to challenges of the immigrant community

Salary and Benefits

  • This position is a full–time, exempt position, working 36 hours per week.
  • Hybrid work will be permitted.
  • Salary Range: $55,000 - $68,000 per year, commensurate with experience
