Summary

We are currently seeking a full-time Managing Attorney for the Refugee and Immigrant Services Program located in South Boston.

Responsibilities

Manage the daily operations of a large non-profit immigration legal services department. Supervise casework of attorneys and Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives. Train and mentor immigration legal services staff. Oversee all administrative aspects of program. Represent a small caseload (less than 20) of clients before EOIR and with USCIS. Develop and oversee community outreach and educational activities related to immigration law and policy.

Qualifications

  • Authorized to practice law. Admitted in any state.
  • Five years experience in the practice of immigration law; humanitarian and family based immigration law experience strongly preferred.
  • Minimum three years supervisory experience of attorneys and/or DOJ accredited representatives, preferably in nonprofit legal setting.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish, preferred.
  • Sensitivity to client needs is necessary.
  • Proficient administrative, data collection, typing and computer skills including MS Office and immigration program management software.
  • Familiarity with e-learning and webinars, experience with database systems.
  • Proficient communication, writing and typing skills with keen attention to detail.
  • Pleasant telephone skills and thoughtful demeanor towards others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a positive and professional relationship with co-workers, clients, and service providers.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to relate well and effectively in a diverse workplace with diverse client population is required.
  • Ability to work some Saturdays and evenings as needed.

Purpose of Position

A Bilingual Asylum Fellow at Catholic Charities:

  • Provides direct representation to clients on affirmative and defensive asylum cases and in accordance with grant and programmatic goals.
  • Applies appropriate techniques and standards in program development, service delivery and case management in providing legal representation, advice and referral to individuals and families in the area of immigration law.
  • Attends clinics and workshops.
  • Works collaboratively with legal director in developing strategic plans, priorities and directing the implementation of services for assigned service area.
  • Uses program statistics to monitor and evaluate services and outcomes.
  • Recommends, develops, and implements improvements as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains professional relationships with community-based organizations, parishes and corporations to extend the reach of services and community support.
  • Completes necessary administrative duties (paperwork, case files, etc.) timely and accurately.
  • Assists in mentoring legal interns, fellows, and volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Strong computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Office Suite

Salary

Starting at $55,000 salary/year with increases commensurate with experience & education.

Summary Description:

Primary Responsibilities:

Technical Assistance

  • Provide accurate and comprehensive legal advice to affiliates through the Ask the Expert portal

Training

Attorney Pro Bono Coordinating

Summary

The Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney develops and oversees Hogar’s pro bono legal services, leveraging the interest and skills of volunteer attorneys to provide additional legal representation in family-based and humanitarian immigration matters such as asylum cases, U or T visas, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, removal defense, naturalization, and others. This includes recruiting pro bono attorney volunteers,assigning appropriate cases to pro bono attorneys, and providing guidance and mentorship to pro bono attorneys throughout the duration of each case.

Additionally, the Pro Bono Coordinating Attorney will:

  • Conduct outreach and recruit potential pro bono attorney volunteers
  • Design and present training materials for pro bono attorneys with varying levels of prior experience in family-based and humanitarian immigration law
  • Develop and maintain up-to-date sample filings and other materials,
  • Maintain pro bono client files.
  • Provide technical assistance and mentorship to pro bono attorneys throughout the duration of each case.
  • Conduct client consultations, identify cases appropriate for pro bono representation, and maintain a small caseload of clients for direct representation.
  • Participate as needed in agency and program-wide data collection, fundraising, training, and strategic planning.
  • Coordinate with Hogar’s Naturalization Manager to staff and train pro bono attorney volunteers for naturalization workshops as needed.
  • Participate on a regular basis in day-long weekend naturalization workshops.
  • Provide referrals to clients for non-legal services as needed.

Prerequisites for the Position:

  • Juris Doctor degree and admission to the bar of any state; Virginia bar admission strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of experience practicing family-based and/or humanitarian immigration. law; experience with removal defense preferred.
  • Familiarity with private law firm and corporate pro bono culture.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English (writing and speaking) required.

Afghan Placement and Assistance Program (APA) Supervising Attorney

Summary

The Afghan Placement and Assistance Program (APA) Supervising Attorney works exclusively with Afghan Special Immigrant Visa holders and parolees evacuated from Afghanistan in summer/fall 2021. S/he prepares cases for submission to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and represents clients before the USCIS Washington District Office and the Arlington Asylum Office in matters including adjustment of status, asylum, work permit applications and renewals, family petitions, and Special Immigrant Visa petitions. The Supervising Attorney coordinates all aspects of a client's case, including client communication, relevant research, drafting personal statements, preparing immigration forms, writing briefs, and advocacy with law enforcement and other agencies.

Additionally, the Supervising Attorney will:

  • Assist in the supervision of staff attorneys, DOJ-accredited representatives, volunteers, and student interns. on site interpreters available
  • Provide technical review (i.e., open and periodic single-blind peer review) of filings of legal staff; serve as point person for risk mitigation related to provision of legal advice and counsel.
  • Provide in-service training to staff and volunteers on immigration-related skills and knowledge.
  • Provide public education in the community, collaborating with other agencies.
  • Advise the Program Director on legal issues pertaining to the APA Program (including recommendations for staff training opportunities).
  • Participate as needed in agency and program-wide data collection, fundraising, training, and strategic planning.
  • Participate in meetings with immigration legal service community-based organizations. Provide referrals to clients for non-legal services as needed.

Summary:

The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), a nonprofit legal services organization, has an immediate full-time opening for a Paralegal. This position performs administrative support and coordination for attorneys in the Religious Immigration Services (RIS) Section. The main functions include administrative support to the assigned Staff Attorneys, performing all administrative functions as directed, primarily related to the attorney’s caseload and case preparation. The paralegal must be extremely organized and meticulous.

The candidate will work alongside a team of experienced immigration attorneys and professionals. Will prepare and file petitions using LawLogix. Experience in preparing immigration petitions, applications, and visas is essential. The candidate should have 1 to 3 years of experience with a focus on employment-based immigration law. Must have knowledge of how to prepare, and file petitions, and case management experience using an immigration case management database system, preferably LawLogix. Experience with data entry, MS word, and MS excel also required.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assist the attorney with the preparation of religious worker cases to be filed with USCIS, the Department of State or the Administrative Appeals Office
  • Assist the attorney with the management of client cases and files
  • Assist the attorney with updating and maintaining client data, including “immigration” information, in Case Management Software, or CMS
  • Assist with the preparation of petitions, applications, sponsor letters, instructions letters, etc. and compile exhibits and other supporting documentary evidence in a timely manner for attorney review
  • Communicate with clients to obtain information and necessary documentation for case preparation
  • Ensure proper organization and filing of client documents after case is prepared per attorney instructions
  • Send completed case work to clients and file cases with USCIS and U.S. Consulates per attorney instructions
  • Review client information in CMS when new client cases are retained
  • Assist attorney with beginning new cases and processes in CMS
  • Notify clients of case processing and updates per attorney instructions
  • Ensure proper recordkeeping of immigration documents in client files
  • Keep attorney fully informed of client communications and updates
  • Act as a member of the section’s CLINIC Convening team
  • Perform all administrative duties as required by the attorney, primarily related to his/her caseload and case preparation
