Immigration Attorney

Summary:

Represent and advise clients in immigration matters such as adjustment of status, removal proceedings, asylum appeals, and naturalization interviews before USCIS. This representative of La Posada, an Anabaptist faith-based Immigrant Aid organization, will be convinced that God’s love embraces all peoples and cultures, is committed to working for peace and justice, and has a passion for the rights of people who need to navigate the legal system to make their home in the U.S.

Responsibilities:

  1. Represent clients in removal proceedings in Immigration Courts, including in asylum cases (if, sufficiently experienced).
  2. Represent clients in other immigration matters such as adjustment of status and naturalization interviews before USCIS.
  3. Create and prepare immigrant and non-immigrant visas.
  4. Review and proofread complex evidence and case documents.
  5. Track, monitor, and log all evidence and documents for client cases.
  6. Create, compile, and prepare all documentation for filing.
  7. Proactively research new legislation and legal changes in immigration law.
  8. Prioritize multiple responsibilities and manage case deadlines for multiple clients.
  9. Assist with additional administrative and clerical duties as necessary.
  10. Participate in La Posada team planning and reporting.
  11. Meet with the Executive Director on a regular basis.
  12. Maintain a current knowledge of legal trends and changes.
  13. Nurture professional, personal and spiritual development and demonstrate Christian commitment and the spirit of La Posada to coworkers and clients.
  14. Demonstrate commitment to La Posada’s goals of anti-racist action.

Qualifications:

  1. JD and current valid license in any US state, Indiana preferred.
  2. Ability to speak and write in Spanish is required.
  3. Strong advocacy, research, and writing skills; high-level attention to detail; and strong academic credentials.
  4. A minimum of one year experience in immigration law; passion for the rights of people who need help to navigate the legal system. Desire to work with underserved communities.
  5. Ability to work on daily tasks independently, proactively, and with minimal supervision.
  6. Sensitive, compassionate and positive; ability to relate well to people and listen perceptively.
  7. Some travel may be required.
  8. Computer skills – proficiency with word processing.
  9. Willingness to be flexible in work schedule, giving extra time when needed.

Responsibilities:

  1. Answers the phone and records all messages.
  2. Responsible for taking and recording client payments, making bank deposits, and paying expenses.
  3. Runs the docketing systems of the organization, Amicus Attorney and a paper calendar.
  4. Sets and enters all appointments, expenses, and transactions in Amicus Attorney.
  5. Sends out notices of hearings to all clients.
  6. Maintains the case files.
  7. Keeps a running list of supplies that need to be ordered and orders supplies.
  8. Responsible for 15 hours of casework per week.
  9. Creates financial reports from Amicus Attorney.
  10. Occasionally responsible for translation of documents or client interpretation.
  11. Nurture professional, personal and spiritual development and demonstrate Christian commitment and the spirit of La Posada to coworkers and clients.

Qualifications:

  1. At least two years of college.
  2. Prior experience working in a legal environment is preferred.

Summary

Reporting to and working on close collaboration with the Deputy Director and the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement will design and execute on a comprehensive development strategy for Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC). The Director of Advancement will oversee and execute all donations, grants and other on-going fundraising efforts. The Director of Advancement will manage CLINIC’s advancement team. This position is a member of CLINIC’s Senior Leadership team and, as such, participates in planning and decision-making affecting the entire organization and shares responsibility for achieving the agency’s mission.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design development strategy for CLINIC’s work with the Senior Leadership Team to identify funds needed, preferred funding targets and approaches.
  • Conduct research, prospecting, and application to multiple donor sources, including major gifts and corporate prospects.
  • Build a robust donor base by developing and maintaining key long-term relationships with donors and prospects.
  • Train and mentor advancement staff and Senior Leadership Team on cultivating resources.
  • Communicate fundraising goals and progress to all staff, Board of Directors, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Oversee grant proposals and reports to foundations.
  • Regularly works with Senior Leadership and program staff to match funding interests of current and potential funders and donors.
  • Oversee resource development-related special events and campaigns.
  • Provides staff necessary direction, supervision, and support to ensure clarity in roles, responsibilities, expectations and professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree, preferably in business or public administration, marketing, communications, or comparable field with significant coursework in fundraising.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in resource development or fundraising for nonprofits, including five (5) years of experience managing relations with individual donors and foundations.
  • Proven success in development for a similarly situated non-profit organization, including success in fundraising from multiple donor channels.
  • Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising
  • Skilled in the use of fundraising and business software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience in planning, leading, and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, and tracking and reporting on progress to Senior Leadership and Board of Directors.
  • Skilled at establishing and cultivating strong relationships with peers across different levels of the organization and externally.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Catholic social teaching on immigration and the structure of the Catholic Church.
  • Ability to travel for fundraising efforts

Physical Demands

Sedentary work. Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. This position requires periodic travel for trainings, site visits, special events and conferences.

Immigration Attorney/Accredited Representative

The Children’s Legal Center (CLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing free immigration legal services to children and their families across Illinois who have experienced victimization. CLC has well-established partnerships with domestic violence service centers in Illinois and directly represents clients in removal proceedings before the Immigration Court. CLC has an immediate opening for a full-time licensed attorney or accredited representative.

Description

CLC is seeking an attorney or accredited representative to join its team devoted to representing clients in Illinois. The individual would represent clients through our established partnerships, provide direct representation to children and families who have experienced victimization. The attorney/accredited representative will maintain a direct representation caseload before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The attorney/accredited representative will collaborate with other attorneys, mental health professionals and interns to provide zealous and holistic representation to clients.

Requirements

  • Admission to any state bar or full accreditation before EOIR
  • Demonstrated past interest in immigration law
  • Passion for working with children and families
  • Exceptional organizational skills, strong sense of personal initiative, and ability to multi-task
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written

Compensation

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The salary range starts at $50,000.00 - $60,000.00 depending on experience.
