Immigration Legal Services Attorney

Summary

The Immigration Legal Services Attorney will oversee the immigration legal services program at CSS. He/She will work with clients to provide immigration legal counsel through direct representation for immigration benefits before USCIS. He/She will cultivate relationships in the community, administer any grants awarded to CSS, and provide workshops as needed in collaboration with community partners.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide immigration legal services to clients, and coordinate and manage caseload.
  • Conduct individual client interviews and follow-up appointments.
  • Create, compile, and prepare all documentation for filing.
  • Maintain strict client confidentiality, including keeping case notes confidential.
  • Participate in and/or lead community outreach events, including workshops and group processing events as needed.
  • Administer any grants received by CSS for the immigration legal services program.
  • Participate in legal immigration training in order to keep current with immigration laws, regulations, and processes.
  • Compile and submit program outcomes and reports to funders.
  • Counsel and prepare immigrant and non-immigrant visas.
  • Review and proofread complex evidence and case documents. Track, monitor, and log all evidence and documents for client cases.
  • Draft and edit client Letters of Support for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
  • Proactively research new legislation and legal changes in immigration law.
  • Prioritize multiple responsibilities and manage case deadlines for multiple clients.
  • Ensure the avoidance of conflicts of interest. Note that conducting outside legal casework is prohibited as it could lead to conflict or give rise to a professional liability claim.
  • Represent, communicate, and integrate authentic Catholic social teaching in the provision of social service programming.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Juris Doctorate degree with membership in good standing in the bar of Nebraska. Minimum two years of work experience in immigration law is preferred with a strong preference that serves diverse, refugee and immigrant populations. Experience preparing USCIS and NVC applications including U-visa, SIJ, Asylum, Family Petitions, Adjustment of Status, Waivers, USCIS appeals and motion. The employee must also be knowledgeable about the Catholic Church and support its moral and religious teachings.
