White House Memorandum Proposing Additional Asylum Restrictions

CLINIC joined 30 human rights organizations in calling on Attorney General Barr and Acting Homeland Security Secretary McAleenan to refrain from adopting proposed regulations set forth in an April 2019 White House Memorandum. This memorandum instructs the Justice Department and DHS to draft regulations, which would continue to place asylum seekers at risk, including establishing an unprecedented fee on asylum applications; limiting asylum seekers’ right to work authorization; and expediting the adjudication of asylum cases before an already strained immigration court system. CLINIC opposes these and any initiatives that weaken our country’s asylum system, go against our obligations under U.S. and international law, and leave no space for compassion and human dignity.
