Topic for Week 1: March 5 –March 12: Family-Based Immigration: How it Works, Who’s Covered, Nuts and Bolts of Petition Process
The first week of the course you will learn about immigrating family members as either immediate relatives or through the family preference system. This will include learning how to read and understand the Department of State's visa bulletin. We will also cover establishing the requisite family relationship for visa petition approval and the process for filing an I-130 petition.You will be introduced to our hypothetical clients: the Mendoza-Villegas family. Throughout the course you will answer questions about this family's eligibility to immigrate and help them through the process.

Topic for Week 2: March 13 – March 19: Retention of Priority Dates, Derivative Beneficiaries, Child Status Protection Act
This week you will learn who qualifies to immigrate as a derivative beneficiary. You will also learn what happens to a pending relative petition when circumstances in the petitioner's or beneficiary's life change. For example, the petitioner may naturalize, divorce or lose LPR status. The beneficiary may get married, divorce or turn age 21. During this week you will also learn about the Child Status Protection Act (CSPA) and how that law impacts both principal and derivative beneficiaries.

Topic for Week 3: March 20 – March 26: Surviving Relatives, Immigrating Through Marriage
This week the focus is on immigrating through marriage. You will learn about what is a valid marriage for immigration purposes and some of the restrictions in the law for certain marriage-based petitions. You will also learn about fiancé(e) petitions and conditional residence status. The week also includes a discussion of the provisions for surviving relatives.

Topic for Week 4: March 27 – April 2: Affidavits of Support
This week you will learn about the public charge ground of inadmissibility and the requirement for every petitioner of a family-based petition to file an affidavit of support. You will learn who qualifies as a sponsor, the significance of the sponsor's household size, whose income counts in calculating income, how much income is sufficient, the use of assets, and other important requirements under the law.

Topic for Week 5, April 3 – April 9: Adjustment of Status
The focus this week is on obtaining lawful permanent residence through adjustment of status in the United States. You will learn who is eligible to adjust in the U.S. and who is not and must go through consular processing to gain LPR status. You will learn about eligibility under both INA section 245(a) and section 245(i) and the application process.

Topic for Week 6, April 10-16: Consular Processing; Family Immigration Review
In this final week of the course you will learn about the procedure for applying for an immigrant visa at a U.S. consulate abroad. This will include a look at the role of the National Visa Center, the forms and documents required for consular processing and the immigrant visa interview.

This six-week e-learning course includes 9 hours of webinar-based instruction and approximately 15 hours of self-directed learning assignments, based on an estimate of 2.5 hours of reading and other homework assignments each week.
