The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. releases backgrounder

SILVER SPRING, Maryland—Revelations in the press about the behind-the-scenes process of denying Temporary Protected Status to various countries show the Trump administration’s disregard for the advice of experts, including senior U.S. diplomats, and other information urging the continuation of the protection.

This backgrounder outlines the range of shortcomings in how TPS decisions have been made and includes links to numerous reports on country conditions that explain why TPS should be continued

As TPS terminations have been announced one by one since October, the administration has consistently set aside requests for extensions from the affected countries, failed to follow the statutory requirement for prompt release of relevant information and ignored country conditions experts who warned about the implications of ending TPS.

Regarding inaccurate information released from USCIS, Jill Marie Bussey, CLINIC’s advocacy director, said, “This affected the ability of TPS holders to comply with the law and protect themselves during termination periods. The end result is confusion, stress, panic and undue suffering for the people with TPS and their families.”
