CLINIC's Comprehensive Overview of Immigration Law is a six-week e-learning course designed to help new advocates understand the fundamentals of immigration law and how the different aspects of immigration law come together.  The course presents an overview of core immigration law information and concepts, including what immigration law is about, who enforces immigration law, and the different types of legal status available to non-citizens. It then takes a closer look at specific forms of immigration benefits, and how eligibility is impacted by inadmissibility and deportability issues.  The course also introduces participants to the critical practice skills necessary to be an effective advocate, including interviewing, legal research and professional responsibility rules and best practices.

Each week of the course revolves around specific themes, which are divided into two units. Instruction for each unit has two components: (1) a self-directed set of activities designed to take about two hours, which includes reading, exercises and a weekly review quiz so that the participant becomes familiar with the unit topic, followed by (2) a 90-minute webinar presented by two CLINIC attorneys, designed to review the unit material and exercises, respond to questions, and show how the immigration law issues interconnect. In this independent study version of the course, all of the webinars were recorded between April 2 and May 10, 2018.

Certificates of completion for the COIL course are only provided to participants in the live course; you cannot earn a certificate of completion in the independent study.   As a participant in this independent study course, however, any webinars you view will satisfy the webinar viewing requirement for that unit in the live course.    Once you are on the live course website, just click on the activity box next to the recorded webinar for any webinar you already viewed in the independent study course.    You will also need to take all required quizzes on the live COIL course, as well as take the final exam, in order to meet these course completion requirements.
