They will also discuss hot topics and recent procedural hurdles, and provide an update on the administration’s assault on asylum seekers.

The trainers for this webinar series are CLINIC’s:

  • Reena Arya, Senior Staff Attorney, Training and Legal Support
  • Lolita Brayman, Attorney, Defending Vulnerable Populations
  • Victoria Neilson, Managing Attorney, Defending Vulnerable Populations

In this webinar, the trainers will focus on the basics of asylum. They will discuss concepts such as past persecution and well-founded fear, the five protected grounds and the establishment of a nexus to these grounds, and humanitarian asylum. The trainers will also discuss important recent case law, such as Matter of A-B- and Matter of L-E-A-, and their potential effect on establishing asylum eligibility.

What happens if your client misses the one-year filing deadline for asylum? In this webinar, the trainers will delve into the one-year filing deadline and its exceptions, including ways to formulate arguments for those exceptions. They will also present an overview of the protection screening process (credible fear and reasonable fear) for those who are subject to expedited removal.
