In this time of enhanced enforcement, this two-day family-based immigration law training provides updated information and analysis on selected topics in family-based immigration, including enhanced risks to applicants of being placed in removal proceedings if their petitions or applications are denied.

Day One (November 13) will cover:

  • Exposure to enforcement in family-based immigration, including a review of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ guidance on Notices to Appear and Requests for Evidence.
  • Documenting family relationships.
  • Navigating conditional residency.
  • Updates and practice tips on adjustment of status and consular processing.
  • Updates on public charge inadmissibility and the affidavit of support.

Day Two (November 14) will cover:

  • Documenting family relationships.
  • Submission of arrest records.
  • Potential immigration consequences of marijuana use.
  • Assessing client inadmissibility based on misrepresentation, false claim to citizenship and smuggling.
  • Waivers of Inadmissibility.

For newer practitioners, the conference offers a free optional introductory session on November 12, as well as a fundamentals track of workshops on both days of the conference. Day Two of the conference will also include presentations on consular processing by representatives of both the National Visa Center (invited) and the U.S. Consulate Immigrant Visa Section in Ciudad Juarez. Conference speakers include Susan Schreiber, Charles Wheeler and Kristina Karpinski of CLINIC.

The training is for the staff of Catholic Charities and other community-based organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status, and attorneys and legal worker staff of private law offices.
