The St. Frances Cabrini Center for Immigrant Legal Assistance team is seeking one highly qualified Bilingual Legal Assistant to assist refugees, asylees, and other immigrants throughout the Greater Houston-Galveston area seeking to become U.S. Citizens. Working with a diverse client base, the Legal Assistant will schedule clients for in-house consultations as well as workshops, coordinating with attorneys and volunteers.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Schedules and conducts consultations with clients to assist them in their Naturalization applications, including compilation and organization of supporting documents, translating into English documents in foreign language, and answering questions clients have about the process.
  • Provides outreach and education services to refugees, asylees, and other immigrants.
  • Assists attorney with the logistical arrangements for Citizenship workshops, including attending the workshops and helping to coordinate the volunteers.
  • Maintains statistical data for grant reporting.
  • And, performs other duties as assigned, e.g. assisting with in-house meeting and training, coordinates with community partners, engages in coalition activities, participating in staff and agency retreats, assists with special events.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Undergraduate degree in social science or related field, or comparable paralegal experience.

MINIMUM SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • One year experience in legal casework and/or legal clerical experience (preferred).
  • Fluency in Spanish and English (speaking, reading and writing).
  • Paralegal certification is an advantage.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to maintain significant caseload, set priority, multitask and work under pressure and competing demands.
  • Proficiency in basic computing skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, email, database.
  • Demonstrated multi-cultural sensitivity and skills.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have reliable transportation, valid Texas driver’s license and valid vehicle insurance
  • Position requires frequent driving in personal vehicle and/or Agency vehicle to include freeways and highways to satellite offices, job fairs, and offsite meetings and events, throughout the 10 counties Catholic Charities serves from Galveston to Richmond and surrounding towns as needed.
  • Must be able to work on a flexible schedule as needed to meet work, program and project deadlines
