Immigration Advocacy Organizations Ask for Improved Naturalization Process

CLINIC joined a number of immigrants-rights organizations in sending a letter to Director Alejandro Mayorkas of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services asking for an improved naturalization process. A copy of the letter is below.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Director Mayorkas:

Over the course of the past two decades, we have watched immigrants
struggle with the immigration bureaucracy as they try to navigate the citizenship process.
Periodically, they are forced to wait in extraordinarily long backlogs, as the immigration service
only just manages to catch up with the last wave of applications before being overwhelmed by
the next wave. All the while, applicants are asked to pay higher and higher fees and are
promised a more efficient process.

The Obama administration has a tremendous opportunity to create a more open and
transparent naturalization process that fully engages the community. We have developed a
series of recommendations for accomplishing that goal, some of which we recently submitted to
Secretary Napolitano as part of a larger response to her recent directive for review of select
programs.
