Utah Attorney General and former Arizona Attorney General to Discuss Role of States in Immigration Enforcement and Policymaking at April 26th Conference
WASHINGTON — Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff and former Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard will appear at the 8th annual Immigration Law and Policy Conference hosted on April 26th by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) and the Georgetown University Law Center.
Shurtleff, who will offer remarks on the Utah Compact and the state's novel approach to immigration policymaking, also will appear with Goddard at the day-long conference's opening session, “Devolution of Immigration Authority: The Role of States in Immigration Enforcement and Policymaking.”
The two are among a roster of prominent policymakers and immigration experts who will speak at the conference. Others include former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Secretary Julie Myers Wood, Prince William County (VA) Police Chief Charlie Dean and former Homeland Security Undersecretary Asa Hutchinson.
In addition to states' role in immigration policymaking, the conference will examine the prospects and possible outcomes of immigration legislation in the courts (including challenges to birthright citizenship and access to public education); federal-state immigration enforcement partnerships such as Secure Communities and 287(g); immigration detention reform efforts and alternatives to detention; and right to counsel for indigent people in removal proceedings.
