This intensive one day training will focus on current ICE enforcement in the Tri-State Area (Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin) --- including advocacy and legal responses to ICE enforcement and anti-immigrant state legislation.  The morning portion of the training will analyze successful campaigns against Secure Communities and for fair practices and policies in local jails.  The morning session will also examine litigation challenging the anti-immigrant legislation enacted in Indiana. The afternoon session will review the anatomy of a police stop and arrest, Miranda issues, Terry stops, and recent law in this area and other enforcement issues.  The goal of the training is to understand the practical application of ICE enforcement policies in the Tri-State Area and to develop appropriate advocacy and legal responses.

Speakers will include Stephen Smith, Organizing Director of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Tom Ruge, attorney at Lewis & Kappes, Maria Baldini-Potermin, attorney at Maria Baldini-Potermin & Associates, Claudia Valenzuela, Associate Director of Litigation at National Immigrant Justice Center, Erich Straub, attorney at Straub LLC, and CLINIC attorneys Susan Schreiber and Debbie Smith.  CLE accreditation, including ethics credits, for State of Indiana is pending.

The training is intended for attorneys and staff of community-based organizations with IRS 501(c)(3) status  as well as private immigration attorneys with experience or interest in understanding the specific application of ICE enforcement practices and policies in the Tri-State area.  Payment is by credit card only.

Space is limited and registration will close September 2, 2011 or sooner if capacity is reached.  There will be no registration refunds.  For registration information call Chris Ozaki at 415-394-9371.
