Getting the Message Out About Immigration Reform

Last week, I spent two days at a Justice for Immigrants meeting in Mason, Ohio. The gathering brought together lay workers, church volunteers, and parish and diocesan staff. It was an interesting mix of ordinary people whose daily interactions with immigrants have inspired them to seek ways to do more and policy experts who spend time developing messages about immigration and the need for immigration reform.

Earlier this week, I attended the book launch for Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate. The book, which was co-written by World Relief staffers Jenny Hwang and Matthew Soerens, draws on the authors’ personal experiences working with immigrant communities and provides a faith-based perspective on the immigration debate.

According to news accounts, the so-called “minutemen” are planning to stage demonstrations today and tomorrow at a conference in Cincinnati, Ohio, which will bring together church people to discuss the need to reform our nation’s immigration laws. Why? What is it about this gathering of the faithful that compels the group to protest?

In Chicago this past Saturday, a large crowd gathered to pray for and to promote reforms to our immigration laws. Cardinal Francis George, archbishop of Chicago and president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, addressed those in attendance and called on the government to put an immediate end to immigration raids that threaten to separate families. Prayer Vigil for Immigration Reform

The Question of Immigration in the United States

The Vatican’s Fides News Agency released a dossier this week analyzing the current state of immigration in the United States. The Vatican expressed its support for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops for having consistently advocated for immigration reform that assures the human dignity of migrants and takes into account the wellbeing of their families.
