Marking the Anniversary of the Postville Raid
Tue, 05/12/2009 - 2:32pm — lhillMay 12, 2009
Today is the first anniversary of ICE’s enforcement action at the Agriprocessors Inc. meat processing
plant in Postville, Iowa. On May 12, 2008, over 900 ICE agents arrested 389 undocumented workers in an enforcement action bigger than any other that had come before. Today, Agriprocessors managers face both state and federal charges and the company has declared bankruptcy. The town’s population has shrunk by nearly half. Those who remain in the town of Postville are being held together and supported as a community by the local faith groups, including St. Bridget’s Catholic Church.

May Day and Reform
Fri, 05/01/2009 - 12:08pm — lhillMay 1, 2009

While advocates have been using May Day as a rallying point for immigration reform for years, today’s marches are set against the growing sense that the federal government is getting serious about pursuing concrete changes.
This week, there have been three particularly interesting developments, both in Washington and across the country.

CLINIC Executive Director on Cuba, Policy Changes, and Migration
Wed, 04/22/2009 - 10:34am — mfrankenApril 22, 2009
From the earliest days of our nation’s founding, the Catholic Church has provided welcome and support to immigrants as they transition to life in their adopted homes around the country. These efforts in the United States are part of the Church’s global concern for migrants everywhere. For more than 30 years, I have had the privilege of being part of this tradition through my work at Catholic Charities, Migration and Refugee Services of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, and CLINIC.

2000, Congress passed the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act, creating two new visa classes for certain immigrant victims of violence. The so-called T- and U-visas offer noncitizens temporary legal status in exchange for their cooperation in helping police officials investigate crimes.
Holy Cross Ministries, a CLINIC affiliate based in Salt Lake City, Utah, runs one of the busiest U-visa legal clinics in the United States. I recently spoke to Sister Sharlet Wagner, immigration program director at HCM, about her agency’s experiences working with victims of violence.
